Thank you to all 369 participants of our Mother’s Day 5k and 2M walk yesterday in FDR Park, and to Mother Nature for not raining on us, and actually clearing up for the awards portion of the day. We had Jerry, a representative from Urban Athletics, who donated wonderful raffle prizes, as well as bringing apparel for purchase. George Grenier had a particularly good time tossing the many pairs of socks into the crowd as a warm up for the other raffle prizes from Schech’s Pools and Spas, Anthony Jeweler and New York Sports Club. Not a bad arm, George! Robi Wolf, as our Food Director, and Bev Maile and Deb Moccia as the Food Crew, made a particularly lovely presentation of the post-race refreshments. Way to go, ladies! Karen Davies, our Scorer Extraordinaire, put together the results in a timely fashion (on her own this time); her efforts are truly appreciated. Jack Brennan took photos at the finish line, and Greg Diamond shot some out on the course. Both are available on the website as well as the results. Once again, things ran smoothly, thanks to all the volunteers who sign up show up, and generally fill in wherever it’s needed. And again, I received positive comments from not-so-fast runners, and first-time racers, who appreciated the cheers from the finish line crew. Joe and I say every year that this is our last year; time for someone else with fresh ideas and more energy. Obviously, we’ve lied in the past, but now toss out the idea that the Mother’s Day race is one of the most fun races on the TRR schedule, that it provides an opportunity for women to get involved in a healthy event, and is truly appreciated by everyone who participates in it. If you’ve ever thought about race directing, consider starting with the Mother’s Day race. We’d be happy to have you work with us next year, before you actually dive in on your own. –Cathy Groneman ps Also, we have two found items: one black diaper bag with the name SADOWSKI on the outside in white, and a child’s water bottle. Drop us an email if they’re yours.

The post Mother’s Day 2013 Race Director’s Wrap Up appeared first on Taconic Road Runners Club.

The Taconic Women’s Travel Team rocked the red carpet at the Nike Women’s Half Marathon in Washington, DC on April 28. I mean that literally, since a red carpet covered the street at the start of the race, at which we had what amounted to an elite start, virtually seconds off the”gun”. The team included our organizer, Nancy Young, Tina Batton, Karen Pearson, Tracey Doucette, Carol Hansen, Jenny Setareh, Deb Wessely, Caroline Curvan, Janet Hartman, Cara Lorenzoni, Fran Pisano and yours truly. The qualifying standards for joining the team were very stringent; to Nancy’s question, “Ya wanna come?”, we all answered, “I guess”, and there we were. We brought along our own cheering section in the persons of Cara’s sister Tricia and Deb’s sister Lisa. We think they rock, too. Leading off all 15,000 women were Shalane Flanagan and Joan Benoit Samuelson. The course started and ended on Pennsylvania Avenue near the White House, winding past the Capitol Building, the Lincoln Memorial, and the Kennedy Center, with a beautiful stretch along the Potomac River. The day was sunnier than we had anticipated, but that only made the course more scenic. There were bands all along the route, but my favorite was the all-percussion band near the Kennedy Center. At the finish, the “icing on the cake” was receiving, not finisher medals, but Tiffany necklaces, presented on silver trays by men in tuxedos! But the “chocolate covered strawberry” on top of the icing was the fact that I got to speak with Joan Benoit Samuelson after I crossed the finish line. My colleagues at work told me I sounded like a groupie, and I’m proud to say I am! Fran received a text from Karen Pearson later Sunday afternoon, as we toured the city via the “hop on, hop off” bus tour, with the information, that, according to early results, Fran Pisano finished 4th in her age division, Carol Hansen placed 2nd in hers, and I finished 1st in mine. We were in the Lincoln Memorial at the time, and Abe was a witness to my “happy dance of joy”. All in all, it was a very enjoyable weekend, with good company, good food, a wonderful race course, and a rocking race, and, as always, TACONIC WOMEN RULE! -Cathy Groneman

The post Nike Women’s Half Marathon, Cathy’s Perspective appeared first on Taconic Road Runners Club.

This run is 10 times 2 minutes hard and 2 minutes recovery. I’d like to add an extra loop going out around the upper pasture so that we end closer to the starting point. I’ll explain in more detail before the start. The workout takes 40 minutes so we will have time for those of us who wish to go to the monthly club meeting. We will start on time if you get stuck and are late run backwards on the course directly to the lake. Jcak – The workouts start at 5:30pm.
