2011 Mini Is Dedicated to Grete Waitz
Grete Waitz, the nine-time winner of the New York City Marathon, also won the NYRR New York Mini 10K five times (1979–82, 1984). Waitz passed away on April 19 at age 57 after a long battle with cancer. The 40th running of the Mini, on June 11, will be dedicated to the great Norwegian athlete.
Waitz, who shares the record of five Mini wins with Tegla Loroupe, was the silver medalist at the inaugural Olympic women’s marathon in 1984. She retired from competitive running in 1990 but maintained close ties to the sport and to New York City, serving for many years as the chairwoman of NYRR Youth and Community Services and visiting frequently, in particular for the Norwegian Festival races held in Central Park every October.
