What are you doing this summer? Let’s run!
OK, so it’s raining a little. But someday the rain will clear and summer will be upon us. Let’s take this opportunity to plan a great summer of running – here are six really cheap races, the opportunity to see a professional track meet, and plenty of changes to eat, drink, and, of course, run.
First up on July 4th is our 8 miler around Lake Mahopac. This race has been run over 30 times and finishes on the track of Mahopac High School. It’s a great race with a great post-race celebration.
Two days later is a new event — the TrackTown Summer Series 5K Road Race — on Randall’s Island. First there is a (pretty flat) 5K for anyone to run. You get a t-shirt and a free entry into the professional track meet that follows. This all for a very low fee. This series is a couple years old and is coming to NY for the first time. It’s a rare chance to see the pros race up close and personal. Here’s info about the the track meet.
On July 12th the TRR Beer Mile returns. You run a mile and drink 4 beers, that’s all. Winner gets more beer. You must bring a designated driver. Of course, this is a free race. It’s BYOB.
Later in the summer there is the Masters Challenge for 40 and over runners from Taconic and three other teams. This year’s race will be at Rockland Lake State park. No cost for this one either. It’s a flat 5K, food to follow.
August 9 is our free predict your time race. Be the closest to predicting your time and you will win a decent cash prize. You get a t-shirt and the race is FREE. This one is for MEMBERS ONLY. It will be at FDR park and more info will follow at runner.org. Distance to be determined, but it won’t be more than 5k.
Lastly, the Peekskill Brewery Mile on August 20th sponsored and hosted by the Brewery. A fast downhill course is followed by food and drink. The race has a fee but you get a beer. And there is music and food outdoors.
