Wednesday is Upon Us
Dear Jack,
During the summer, it’s all too easy to let the days flow into one. Monday becomes Tuesday, Thursday flows into Saturday, and before you know it our hottest season has disappeared. Back to school, no more casual Fridays, and soon enough we’re out running through the freezing rain, slipping on ice and trying to down gatorade without choking on the frozen parts.
If only there was a day this week where something truly special could happen, where we could have an afternoon and early evening to concentrate on running excellence, hang out with our running friends, and then do something stupid yet memorable.
Well, friends, that opportunity is upon us. We’re holding our second Taconic Beer Mile this Wednesday. But the beer mile is just 1/3 of the running awesome on the 13th.
Club Meeting
At 6:30pm we’ll start to show up at FDR Park in Yorktown Heights, parking lot 6. It’s a great time to hang out, meet new people, tell jokes, listen to my jokes, it’s really fantastic. We have veggie options (even more this time), an Italian sub (which I’m not sure they actually eat in Italy) and beer and sodas.
The meeting — for some — is a warmup for the beer mile which is at 7pm.
Beer Mile
You drink 12oz of beer or any carbonated beverage, you run 400 meters, then you repeat that 3 more times. One mile. Four beers. Whoever finishes first without, er, presenting their beer for additional inspection, wins. Depending on the number of people there, we will create arbitrary awards categories, like gender or degree of functioning alcoholism. These categories, like the effect of drinking, will be arbitrary bordering on reckless.
Although we’ll have beer and wine at the meeting, you must provide your own 4 cans for the race and you must open them during the race. They may be any temperature.
Everyone participating with beer must have a designated driver. A driver that other people can see. You’ll need to sign a waver listing that person. It’ll be great.
After the beer mile, we’ll have our actual meeting, where I’ll stand on a table and give out awards for the beer mile.
Jack’s Workout
Arguably, we should do a little real running as part of our meeting, and coach Jack Brennan is going to be holding his speed workout at the Yorktown High School track. This is a great chance to get into speed (workouts) because the track ensures that you won’t get lost on some obscure trail. In fact, getting lost on the track would imply you got started a little early at the beer mile.
I’ve put a map down at the bottom of this email to show the various locations of this awesome evening.
Here’s an executive summary:
5:45 Jack’s Speed Workout
6:30 Club Meeting Starts at Lot 6
7:00 Beer Mile
7:10 Club Meeting continues, awards for beer mile.
Just to be clear, each one of these activities is independant from each other… you don’t have to do all three. In fact, you’d be nuts to do all three, and although plenty of us our nuts, you’re welcome to just come to the meeting, skip the beer mile, or just do Jack’s workout and jog home from there. That would be pretty hardcore!
In any case, Wednesday is special. It’s going to be great.
